A Puppy Playing with a Toy

Puppy Facts

Puppy training is an essential process for teaching your new canine companion good behavior and basic commands. Here's a basic outline of what puppy training typically involves:

1. Socialization. Expose your puppy to different environments, people, animals, sounds, and situations to help them become well-adjusted and confident.

2. House Training (Potty Training).  Teach your puppy where it's appropriate to go to the bathroom, whether that's outside or on a designated indoor area such as puppy pads.

3. Basic Commands. Start with simple commands like "sit," "stay," "come," and "down." Use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and toys to encourage desired behaviors.

4 Leash Training.  Introduce your puppy to walking on a leash gradually, teaching them to walk calmly beside you without pulling.

5. Crate Training.  Help your puppy become comfortable with their crate as a safe and secure space, which can aid in house training and provide them with a den-like environment.

6. Social Skills. Teach your puppy appropriate behavior around other dogs and people, including how to greet politely and how to play gently.

7. Preventing Undesirable Behaviors.  Discourage behaviors like biting, chewing on furniture, jumping up, and excessive barking through redirection, positive reinforcement of alternative behaviors, and consistency in training.

8. Consistency and Patience. Training takes time and patience. Be consistent in your commands, routines, and expectations, and remember to be patient with your puppy as they learn.

9. Professional Training Classes. Consider enrolling your puppy in a puppy training class or working with a professional dog trainer( Chesapeake Canine!) to get personalized guidance and support.

Remember that every puppy is unique, and training methods may need to be adjusted based on your puppy's personality, breed, and individual needs. The key is to be consistent, patient, and positive in your approach to training.
